Trincomalee hospital waste incineration causing hardship to people

It is reported that people are facing more trouble due to medical waste being burnt in Trincomalee Hospital.

The chimney of the waste incinerator in the Trincomalee hospital has been broken for more than a year and the hospital waste continues to be incinerated in the area without being repaired.

It is reported that the smoke emitted from the hospital is causing chemical poisoning in the nearby areas, and it is also affecting the patients in the hospital and the people living nearby including the tourists coming towards Trincomalee beach.

It is known that many materials such as toxic medical waste of the hospital, surgically removed body parts and plastic materials are burnt in the said area.

Initially, the said smoke was released into the upper atmosphere through a nearly 60 feet high chimney, but now the 40 feet high chimney is broken and the waste products are being burnt without repairing it, causing more trouble to the people.

It is known that complaints have been received from many people in this regard and it has not been rectified till now.
